How Much Protein Do You Actually Need to Lose Weight?

By Rachel · June 26, 2026 · ⏱ 3 min read

If I could get every mama to change just one thing about how she eats, it wouldn't be cutting carbs or counting every almond β€” it'd be eating more protein. It's the single biggest lever for losing the baby weight without feeling miserable. So let's answer the question everyone asks: how much do you actually need?

Why protein is the MVP of weight loss

Protein punches way above its weight when you're trying to lose fat:

  • It keeps you full. Protein is the most filling of the three macros β€” you eat it, and the snack cravings quiet down.
  • It protects your muscle. When you lose weight, you want to lose fat, not the muscle that keeps you strong (and your metabolism humming). Enough protein tells your body to hold onto muscle.
  • It costs calories to digest. Your body burns more energy breaking down protein than carbs or fat β€” a small but free bonus.
  • It matters even more postpartum. Your body is recovering and rebuilding; protein is the raw material.

So how much do you actually need?

Here's a simple, no-spreadsheet rule of thumb:

Aim for about 0.7–1 gram of protein per pound of your goal body weight.

So if your goal weight is around 140 lbs, that's roughly 100–140g of protein a day. If you're just starting out, aim for the lower end (~100g) and build up β€” it's more than most moms are eating now, and that jump alone makes a big difference.

Don't want to do math at all? The way we teach it is even simpler: aim for about 30g of protein per meal, across ~4 meals a day. That naturally lands most moms right around 100–120g without ever counting.

Mama tip: Don't get paralyzed chasing the "perfect" number. "Protein at every meal, around 30g each" gets you 90% of the benefit β€” start there.

A note for breastfeeding mamas

If you're nursing, this is not the time to slash your food. Keep your protein up and your calories adequate β€” both support your milk supply and your recovery. Lean slightly higher on protein, not lower, and check in with your doctor if you're unsure.

Easy ways to hit your protein (any diet)

This works no matter how you eat:

  • Front-load it. Start your day with a protein-forward meal so you're not scrambling to catch up by dinner.
  • Keep a quality protein powder on hand. A shake or smoothie is the busy-mom cheat code β€” 20+ grams in two minutes.
  • Build every meal around a protein you enjoy β€” tofu, beans, lentils, edamame, or whatever fits your way of eating.
  • Sneak it in. A scoop stirred into oats or a yogurt bowl quietly adds 10–20g.

Find your number

Your exact target depends on your weight and goal. Our free calorie calculator finds your daily calorie target in about a minute β€” then just aim for ~30g of protein per meal and you're set.

The bottom line

Protein is the highest-leverage change you can make: more full, more energy, more muscle held onto, and faster results β€” without starving. You don't have to be perfect. You have to be consistent.
